NCSA Field Day
July 28 @ 3:00 PM
The NC Simmental Association will hold a Field Day this year on
Saturday, July 28 at Morrison Farm in Rockwell. Morrison
Farm is owned by Myra Neal Morrison and she raises Simmental and
Brahman Cattle and F-1 crosses. Myra is a director of the
NCSA and she graciously has offered her farm for our Field
Day event. Since it will probably be hot that day,
registration will be from3 to 4 pm with demonstrations and
speakers to begin at 4 pm. Myra will be doing a
demonstration on branding and castrating. There will also be
representatives from Merial and Schering Plough to discuss and
demonstrate their herd health products. State
Veterinarian Dr. Earl Sheppard will discuss foot and mouth disease
and mad cow disease. Auctioneer E.B. Harris will give his
view on marketing cattle, which should be interesting and
entertaining. Then Cabarrus County livestock extension agent
Carl Pless will discuss feeder calf prices and the future market
which is sure to be interesting to all cattlemen. Be sure to
invite your commercial bull buyers as this is an educational event
with many things for everyone to learn. There will be a
small trade show so visitors can talk with our sponsors.
Door prizes will be given away at the end of the Field Day. A
complimentary dinner will be served and all cattle men and women
are invited to attend. This will be a family affair as Myra
has offered her swimming pool for children to enjoy, (Or
even adults if they get hot too!) Lou Hutchinson, the wife
of Director Marvin Hutchinson had agreed to serve as a lifeguard,
so come enjoy the pool, too! For more information on this
event, visit our website at ncsimmental.com or the Morrison Farm
website at Morrisonfarm.com or call 336-468-1679. Directions:

ASA
Breed Improvement Progress
The Carcass
Merit Program was very busy breeding hundreds of females this
spring. These primarily Angus heifers are A.I.'ed to 50% Simmental
bulls and 50% Angus bulls. The results of these trials will lay the
groundwork for multibreed calving ease and carcass EPD's. At
this time, the ASA has harvested at least 3 carcass contemporary
groups totaling more than 400 head of Simmental and Angus sired
calves from the 200 calf crop.
ASA's
carcass database will increase by more than 1500 head this next sire
summary.
All this research
is trying to accomplish 3 things:
1. Provide both direct and
maternal calving ease in crossbreeding systems.
2. Provide above average growth
and feed efficiency.
3. Offer carcass genetics that
add value to most grids. For example, Simmental genetics must
be the best combination of marbling and cutability among the
continental breeds.
The genetic trends
prove breeders are doping well except for maternal calving
ease. Breeders are encouraged to consider this trait in sire
selection.
